London Cycling Campaign - Safer Lorries

The London Cycling Campaign has an interesting suggestion: make lorries safer for other road users.

The London Cycling Campaign has published pictures and video of its new Safer Urban Lorry design, and is calling on the construction industry to adopt similar vehicle designs to reduce the shocking number of lorry-cyclist fatalities.

This is a great idea but I think we're missing something. The question shouldn't be "when can we have safer lorries" but "why don't the police stop obviously dangerous vehicles from being driven through our city".

If you were to drive a car with heavily tinted windows through London you would, sooner or later, be stopped on the not unreasonable grounds that you couldn't see enough of your surroundings to navigate safely through them. What is special about lorries that they should be able to drive around without taking a similar amount of care?

Great article in The Atlantic Cities:

On balance, cyclists' illegal behavior—like that of pedestrians—adds much, much more convenience to life than danger. Aggressive enforcement of traffic laws could upend the fragile system of incentives that leads thousands of people to undertake a long and sweaty commute each day

I don't tend to jump lights or ignore one-way traffic restrictions but even the most saintly cyclist can be tempted to misbehave when faced with a queue of polluting and dangerous motor vehicles.

Brilliant. It's nice to see a Government minister finally making a clear stand on climate change:

Fewer armed police call-outs as London gun crime falls

Good news:

Police say the statistics support evidence that armed crime in London is falling. Recent figures show gun crime down by up to 16 per cent while the number of firearms murders in London fell to just six in 2012.
